Welcome to the very first “Fit and Fabulous” podcast. I want you to feel fit and fabulous so you can enjoy your life. I’ll be showing you how to eat and live healthily (and lose weight if you want to.)
I’m Dr Orlena. I’m from the UK and trained as a paediatric doctor. (That’s British for “pediatric”. We love our extra vowels!)
In 2011 I moved to Spain. Now I have 4 kids and work on line helping people to eat and live healthily.
Currently I offer one on one weight loss coaching. (If you’re interested in one on one coaching, feel free to book a mini session to see if we’re a good fit.)
I’ll be showing you how easy it is to live a healthy life!
If we look at the top 10 causes of death world wide, there are many that are avoidable with healthy eating and living.
I call the 3 biggies (cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes) the “big nasties”.
Studies are done on big populations. When organisations such as the CDC and WHO say that we can prevent disease, they mean within a population.
This information can be used to guide us with our own individual risk. For individuals we talk about "risk reduction". E.g. you may be at high risk of getting diabetes in the next 5 years, or low risk.
That risk can NEVER be reduced to zero. No one can ever say that it's impossible that you'll get a disease (even if it's highly improbable.)
As a doctor you learn to "never say never"!
It is worthwhile reducing your risk as that can take you from "highly probable" that you'll get an illness to "highly improbable....but not impossible."
“At least 200,000 deaths each year from cardiovascular disease could be prevented. More than half of those deaths involve people under the age of 65.”
CBS news summary of CDC report.
I’ll be chatting to a cardiologist in a few weeks for her top tips on how to avoid heart disease.
“The number of people with diabetes has risen from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014.”
Ref: WHO
The WHO also tells us that type 2 diabetes is avoidable through lifestyle. (That means healthy eating and living.)
I’ll be chatting to Dr Mhari Morris, a cancer expert, who’ll be telling us what we can do to reduce our risk of cancer.
During the course of the podcast, I’ll be showing you WHY you want to lead a healthy life (avoid all those diseases and live life to the max!)
As well as HOW to start implementing changes. Healthy eating and living is easy when you know how.
There is no “one way fits all” when it comes to healthy eating and living. You need to find out what works for you.
There are some blanket policies such as “eat lots of vegetables” that we’ll talk about too.
We’ll be looking at recent nutritional research. As well as thinking about why there is so much conflicting advice out there. (Even experts often don’t agree with each other.)
We’ll also be looking at stress and emotions and working out how you can create a lifestyle that you love.
